Programme Structure & Course Outline

 

Year 1 – 100 Level (Pre-Clinical Foundation)

 

Focus: Basic sciences that form the foundation of medicine
Courses include:

  • Communication in English

  • Nigerian Peoples and Culture

  • Elementary Mathematics I & II

  • General Biology I & II + Practical Sessions

  • General Chemistry I & II + Practical Sessions

  • General Physics I & II + Practical Sessions


 

Year 2 – 200 Level (Basic Medical Sciences I)

 

Focus: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Early Clinical Skills
Key Course Components:

  • Gross Anatomy of Limbs, Thorax, Abdomen, Pelvis & Perineum

  • Histology & Embryology

  • Blood, Cardiovascular, Respiratory & Renal Physiology

  • Cell Biology, Carbohydrates, Lipids, Enzymes & Metabolism

  • Clinical Skills I & II

  • Entrepreneurship & General Studies


 

Year 3 – 300 Level (Basic Medical Sciences II / Pathology Introduction)

 

Focus: Transition from theory to disease mechanisms
Areas Covered:

  • Neuroanatomy & Human Genetics

  • Gastrointestinal, Endocrine & Reproductive Physiology

  • General & Systemic Pathology

  • Introductory Pharmacology

  • Microbiology & Parasitology

  • Biochemical Genetics & Nutrition

  • Clinical Skills III

  • Peace & Conflict Studies


 

Year 4 – 400 Level (Introductory Clinical Sciences)

 

Focus: Disease Processes & Diagnostic Medicine
Courses Include:

  • Systemic Pathology & Forensic Pathology

  • Medical Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology & Mycology

  • Clinical Chemistry, Immunology & Nutrition

  • Haematology & Blood Transfusion Science

  • Fundamental & Clinical Pharmacology


 

Year 5 – 500 Level (Core Clinical Rotations)

 

Focus: Hospital-based clinical training
Major Clinical Rotations:

  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology

  • Paediatrics & Child Health

  • Community Medicine & Public Health Programs

  • Emergency Medicine & Bedside Clinical Practice

  • Research Ethics, Biostatistics & Health Policy

Students participate in:

  • Ward rounds

  • Theatre sessions

  • On-call duties

  • Primary health outreach projects


 

Year 6 – 600 Level (Advanced Specialized Clinical Practice)

 

Focus: Advanced patient management, specialty exposure and independent practice readiness
Rotations include:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery

  • Ophthalmology

  • Anaesthesia & Critical Care

  • Psychiatry

  • General Surgery & Sub-Specialties (Plastic, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, etc.)

  • Internal Medicine Subspecialties (Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, etc.)

Students complete:

  • Final Clinical Examinations

  • Logbook & Competency Evaluation

  • Graduation Licensing Requirements
